I am a Woman

I am a woman

A daughter or sister or wife
A mother or a grandmother
A patient or a doctor
Pregnant or invalid or insane

They don’t bother
I am a woman
That’s enough for them

They may be one or two
Or a dozen

They want fun
They want pleasure
They want laughter
They want enjoyment

They catch hold of me
They tear my dress
Crush my self-respect
Crush my dreams

They don’t see my tears
They don’t’ hear my cries

They keep me pinned
To the ground
In the bus
Or in the car

Then they rape me
Alone or together
Once, or repeatedly

They kick me, they beat me
They bite me, they hit me

They destroy me
They ravage me

They drink my blood
They eat my meat

I won’t call them animals
Animals won’t do this
Can I call them monsters?
Monsters won’t do this

What are they?

And yet

I am their sister
Or daughter
Or mother

  1. Yes, they are worse than animals and monsters. And often they escape the punishment(s) for want of proofs !!!

    1. It happens because they know that the law is only in the book, and justice can only be bought in our country. Since the criminals have more money and power, it is difficult for common man to buy juctice.

  3. Quite relevant lines !!!! Capital punishment of the culprits, that too on fast track can be the only deterrant ( if at all anything can be ), to prevent such heinous acts in future!!!!!

  7. Thank you for your kind words. It is really painful that this type of incidence happening again and again in a civilized world. These monsters should be hanged in public. But this is only a temporary solution. We need to address the root causes of this problem. Problem like gender imbalance in Haryana should be thoroughly addressed. But I have no clue what is happening in Kerala. Is Kerala becoming more westernized? I have no answer.

    1. Gender imbalance? No, I don't think. The problem is first social and then psychological. And, as you said, maybe Westernization, too. One has no love or respect for others - humans, animals or plants. In the rat race for achieving 101% one has no time for such soft feelings!

    2. Also majority of such crimes are reported to be happening under the effect of alcohol. Sadly, that being the major source of income, no govt will dare to enforce prohibition......

very timely comment by you in a poetic way. These beggars will be there so long as the administration is silent spectators.

  11. Nice and clear writing. I feel they do not deserve even death. Their legs and hands should be chopped and leave them to live until GOD calls them.

    1. Let us see what happens. After the initial euphoria, things generally cool down and no one bothers about anybody at all. One unfortunate result of our loooooooooooong legal procedures.

Thank you, Lakshmi, for reading the post and commenting.
